2016 has been a bit sh*t hasn’t it?

With a lot of people looking forward to seeing the back of this year, we have some bad news for you…you’re going to have to deal with it for slightly longer than any other year… A second longer to be exact.

This extra second will be added due to the slowing down of the Earths rotation, that is caused by the Earths changing interaction with the moon (which is currently spinning away from Earth at a rate of 3.78 cm a year).

The “leap second” system was first used in 1972, and is used to keep space probes and satellites in sync. In order for this adjustment, a second will be added at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds in Greenwich Mean Time.

In the year in which we lost David Bowie, Prince, George Michael and so many more, lets hope that extra second doesn’t cost us too tough going in to 2017.
