Actor and musician Ashley Walters is developing a new television show about the UK garage scene.

Member of the iconic UK group So Solid Crew and the star of television show Top Boy, Ashley Walters aka Asher D has turned his talents from music and acting to format development and is looking for public submissions on memories of the 1990s garage scene to help him.

Alongside his film production company SLNda which he founded in 2017, the Peckham born artist is seeking inspiration from his followers for his new media venture.

Ashley wrote on Twitter, “I wanna hear memories about the scene – record stores, mad nights out, pirate radio, which of you broke all the rules to be a part of it?”.

Using the online form on the production company’s website, which can be found here, fans can submit their own memories and experiences of the garage scene to help inspire Asher D’s creative process.

Walters’ own involvement in the garage scene during its glory days makes him fully qualified for this new venture.  In the late 90s and early 2000s, Asher D and other members of So Solid Crew experimented with grime, hip-hop and garage sounds to create music that broke through from pirate radio into the mainstream. Their single “21 Seconds” topped the UK singles chart and “Haters”, also taken from their debut album They Don’t Know, entered the chart top ten.

Ashley Walters will be kept busy for a while with the development of this new garage scene inspired show as well as with Top Boy which returns to Netflix in 2019, thanks in part to support from Canadian rapper Drake. Walters will also reprise his starring role in the second series of Sky One’s Bulletproof where he plays a National Crime Agency detective alongside onscreen best friend Noel Clarke.
