Yes it has actually been 12 years since we were blessed with Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Boy In Da Corner’ album, which was released through XL Recordings today in 2003 when he was just 17 years old. In the same year Dizzee won a Mercury Prize for the album which, at the time, made him only the second rapper to do so (Ms Dynamite won the year previous). He even beat Radiohead and Coldplay for the award, which is a huge deal. When he won the award he said; “I want to thank God, my mum and my family and everyone in the underground. Remember to support British talent – because it is there.”

Preach Dizzee preach!

Doors opened for the Grime scene after that, with the genre becoming more recognised after the success of the album. In 2015 Grime is becoming world recognised going stronger than ever; with artists such as Kanye West and Drake paying homage and to the scene.

‘Boy In Da Corner’ peaked at no.23 on the UK album charts, no.16 on the US Billboard Topseekers and no.14 on the US Billboard Top Independent Albums.

In November 2011 Zane Lowe chose ‘Boy In The Corner’ for his Masterpieces series on BBC Radio 1, which also included Oasis’ ‘Definitely Maybe’ and Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’. The listeners couldn’t help but reminisce on the impact that the album created since it was released, look at the albums it was up against!

As the years go on, ‘Boy In Da Corner’ will forever remain a teenage masterpiece that will be remembered for the hard hitting unique production, and quality lyrics that Dizzee Rascal graced us with. Below are some of the best videos from the album.
