The football season is once again in full gear, and to celebrate its return, we have decided to bring you a new weekly feature. This will involve a one-on-one interview with an artist each week talking about their club and giving their predictions for the upcoming weekend’s Premier League fixtures.

To kick it all off, we have the legendary Mercston giving us an insight into his world of football. If you don’t know about the East London man, then you’re rookie. A member of the much coveted ‘The Movement”, Mercston had the country on lock back in the day with his song “Summertime” and is doing big moves at the moment, with his latest video “Match Fit” making noise.

Mercston is known to be an avid Arsenal fan, so we thought he would be the perfect man to start off with.

How do you think Arsenal are doing so far this season?

I’m not gonna lie, the first two home games have annoyed me. At the moment, our build-up play is good, but we lack that end product. Even though it hasn’t been great, it’s not all about the start. I’m more concerned about how the rest of the season goes – we’re only three games in.

What are your expectations for Arsenal this season?

I think we can easily finish in the top two. If we bring a striker in, that will help us challenge for the league, but I don’t know if that will happen. Another FA Cup win is definitely possible, I think we’ll at least get to the final of that again. In Europe, I don’t know to be honest, there’s a lot of big teams out there. If we don’t bring in a good striker, I don’t see us doing that well in the Champions League.

Why did you choose Arsenal?

When I was young, like four or five, I decided to support Tottenham – but my dad quickly made sure that didn’t happen. Ian Wright was the man for me back in the day, so that was a big reason. In the playground I used to tuck in my shirt and celebrate like him. I see certain guys trying to switch up teams every week and that’s not on – you stick by your team.

Did you ever play football, and if so, were you any good?

I was good back in the day, you know. Like a lot of people, if I didn’t have the distractions as a teenager and focused on it, I would’ve made at least Conference standard. I did make it Semi-Pro playing for Clapton, but that was it. I’m still committed to it, though – every Sunday I’m playing for my local team and banging in goals. I’ll go and do a show with Ghetts, and even if I get back at something like 5am, I’ll be there to play in the morning, I love it.

If you could choose one footballer to collab with on a tune, who would it be?

Thierry Henry. I can see him doing some serenading on a hook with that French vibe, hitting those high notes. That would be mad to have him on a tune, I need to make that happen you know. If not Thierry then definitely Rio Ferdinand. I know he loves our culture, and he’s feeling my “Match Fit” song, so shout-out to him.
