Netflix is moving into the editorial world and is set to release a magazine.

With the working title Wide, Netflix will release the magazine in a journal format which will promote its exclusive film and television content as well as the stars within them.  Expect to see appearances from the stars of Dirty John, You, 13 Reasons Why, Narcos and possibly even Top Boy which is due to become a Netflix exclusive series later this year.

In total, Netflix released over 700 different forms of content last year ranging from movies, comedy specials and documentaries.

The magazine will not be available to buy but instead will be released in June just before voting opens for the television award season, notably, the Emmy’s.

On the new magazine, Netflix said, “In preparation for a groundbreaking year in film and television, Netflix has gathered some of the most talented and sought after writers and photographers, thinkers and creatives, to make the inaugural issue of Wide, the Netflix print journal”.

Netflix continues to release content that breaks records and achieves massive viewing numbers however they are yet to receive the mainstream award recognition that film and television released in the traditional way through cinema and television networks receive.

Hollywood icon Steven Spielberg recently spoke about this and said in an interview that Netflix films should not be eligible for Oscar nominations and said that Netflix films are merely made for television films that cannot be compared to cinema. Steven said, “Certainly, if it’s a good show, (it) deserves an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe that films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theatres for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination”.
