We finally have a new mayor of London. Yesterday the result of the mayoral election was decided and announced, with Sadiq Khan set to be the next man to take the reigns of the city.

He becomes the first Muslim mayor of not just London, but of a major capital city in the west generally. He also reclaims the post for the Labour party, after 8 years under a Conservative mayor. He took 1,310,143 votes (57%), giving Khan the largest tally of any UK politician ever, and beating closest rival Zac Goldsmith who received 994,614 votes.

Khan said, “I want to thank every single Londoner for making the impossible possible. I’m so proud that Londoners have today chosen hope over fear and unity over division.”

The son of a Pakistani bus driver, we’re loving the representation of diversity we have in high places with this appointment. Hopefully he can continue to make our city great, although we still a bit sorry for our pal George Galloway.

Sadiq Khan will succeed from a “sad to be leaving” Boris Johnson as the mayor of London.
