A landlord in Wrexham has changed the name of his pub to “Pubby McPubface” after he was inspired by “Boaty McBoatface” earlier this year.

Peter Daniels wasn’t happy to settle for any of the old-style names, so took inspiration from a poll earlier this year in which the public voted to name a new research ship “Boaty McBoatface”. The idea was also brought to the landlord by a customer who mentioned a website which listed unused names for restaurants, which had Pubby McPubface listed on it.

Daniels decided to “have a bit of fun” himself when renaming the Newbridge Arms, saying that “The reception has been excellent. It has caused so much of a giggle. We’ve got a lot of people stopping to take photos of the sign.”

People from across the world have liked the pub’s new Facebook page, with fans in Lanzarote and Cyprus visiting the page.

Although the research ship’s name was eventually changed to the “RRS Sir David Attenborough”, Daniels says that Pubby is here to stay.

“[I was] thinking outside the box. When you’ve also got the aqueduct in Fron that’s painted bright yellow, you’ve got to stand out somehow,’ he said.

“We’re not trying to demonise other pubs or put them down, we decided to have a bit of fun and get people talking.”

He added: “They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, which I agree with.”
