Theresa May has announced she is stepping down from her role as Prime Minister.

Making a statement to the press outside 10 Downing Street, she revealed she will be officially quitting on June 7.

May also said a Conservative leadership contest will take place in the week following her resignation.

She described her decision to leave before delivering Brexit as a “deep regret”, adding she had “done [her] best” to uphold the result of the 2016 referendum.

Theresa May’s resignation comes after her latest Brexit plan was criticised by many MPs.

She concluded her statement with: “The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.

“I do so with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love.”
