Dalston was shut down this evening after a riot broke out on Kingsland Road.

What began as a memorial for Rashan Charles, the 20-year-old man who died after an altercation with police last week, escalated into chaos as angry community member demanded justice.

Demonstrators attempted to shut down Kingsland Road by blocking the street with with cones, bin bags and wheelie bins around 4pm. The situation deteriorated and a riot ensued with shop windows being broken and glass covering the streets. Riot police were then deployed.

This writer was on the scene at 10pm and saw at least 100 hundred riot police officers barricading the street from Dalston Junction station down to the beginning of Shacklewell lane. At that time there were around 10 riot vans, 5 horses and multiple helicopters.
