Across the UK there is a real need for black organ donors. Patients from black communities are more likely to need an organ transplant as they are more susceptible to illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and certain forms of hepatitis, all of which may lead to organ failure and the need for a life saving transplant.

Low donor numbers are having an impact on those waiting for transplants from these communities. On average black patients wait almost a year longer than the rest of the UK population for a kidney transplant.

Sadly, if you wish to donate your organs signing the organ donor register is not enough to guarantee they will be. Your next of kin need to know what your wishes are because they are the ones who will be asked.

NHS Blood and Transplant have teamed up with acclaimed spoken word artist, Brits Critics Choice and BBC Sound Of 2015 nominee George The Poet to produce this powerful poem which highlights the issue facing the black community. George The Poet is a huge supporter of this initiative and one of the fastest rising and most believable voices in contemporary urban music.

Lives can be improved and saved by the act of donation and the importance of having ‘that’ conversation with your loved ones to inform them is vital if you want to donate your organs when you die.
