39 bodies have been found in a lorry container in Essex.
The discovery was made in the early hours of this morning (October 23) at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.
It has been reported that 38 of the people were adults, while one is believed to have been a teenager.
A 25-year-old driver from Northern Ireland has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Essex Police have said the lorry had travelled from Bulgaria before entering the UK on Saturday. They are urging anybody who had seen the vehicle or knows of its journey to contact them.
Deputy Chief Constable, Pippa Mills, has said identifying the victims remains the “number one priority” of the police. The MP for Thurrock, Jackie Doyle-Price, has described the discovery as “sickening news”.
She added: “People trafficking is a vile and dangerous business”.
Officers from The National Crime Agency have been sent to the scene to help with investigation and to identify “organised crime groups who may have played a part”.
