5p bags are actually illegal

An interesting point came across us this week and we thought we should share it with you. Has David Cameron and his team of tenacious Tories broken the law in regards to the new 5p charge on carrier bags that was implemented last week?

In theory, shops cannot charge a customer for a carrier bag if it has the shop name on it. This would be because in doing so the customer becomes, in essence, a walking advertising board for the shop.

To bring in a change of law the government must mention the charge three times in the House Of Lords. The MP’s must then agree and after that, the said change of law will be heard in the Queen’s speech at the opening of parliament.

It seems like, hypothetically, David Cameron and his Tory party have not only changed the law on carrier bags, but they have also broken the law.

Whilst this is a great move to help our environment, I would agree with the fact this hasn’t been thoroughly thought through. Are clear plastic bags the answer? Will this be swept under the carpet?
