Printed receipts are being phased out by high street shops in a bid to reduce paper waste.
River Island and Dunelm are among the shops who have committed to a paperless pledge by 2023 and will stop giving customers paper copies of their receipts unless they ask for them.
Holland and Barrett removed paper receipts from their online orders two years ago.
According to research by Parcel Hero, 87,000 trees are used every year to produce the 11.2 billion receipts given to shoppers each year.
As reported by iNews, Samantha Lind, a Beat The Receipt campaigner, said, “Paper receipts account for tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions every single year, and most of them end up straight in the bin. This is the retail industry’s ‘plastic straw’ moment, we’ve woken up to the damage we’re doing to the environment and it’s time for drastic change.
“Customers want it, the retail industry can benefit from it, and our planet needs it.”
Plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds were banned in October 2020.
It was estimated that 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers, and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds were used in England every year.
