Jewellery has always held an important place in the Hip-hop landscape. Growing almost synonymously with the genre throughout the 80’s and 90’s, as rap music became more commercialised, so did the jewellery industry.

The result is a 2021 in which it seems impossible to listen to a song without hearing a reference to an AP, Audemars or Baguettes. In this age in which rap music itself has never been more lucrative, a new world of designer jewellers have stormed to fame, creating their own rich subculture of appreciation for the art, and indeed profits, of jewellery.

This new four-part documentary by the Migos explores the subtleties and nuances of the world of jewellery in great depth. The focus ranges from why rappers are so drawn to ice in the first place, to how the world of jewellery has evolved, to the art behind the jewellery.

If you’ve ever wanted to truly understand the context behind the countless references to jewellery in rap, this four-part documentary is a great start. It’s also an interesting look for the Migos, who seem to be spreading their wings outside of music even further.
