Popular high street chain Boots is set to stock a brand new weight loss injection this Spring, the first of its kind to launch in the UK.
The jab is a one-weekly dosage of the drug semaglutide, which was originally developed to treat diabetes and related health issues, all the way back in 2017.
Created by Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, they have two branded versions of the drug, varying in dose; “Wegovy” for weight loss and “Ozempic” for diabetes.
Speaking to LADbible, a spokesperson for Boots said, “Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss medicine that can help to regulate appetite and reduce cravings.
“It can be an effective medicine to achieve sustained weight loss when used alongside a reduced calorie diet, increased physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices.”
The drug effectively works by suppressing a users appetite. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence explained the science, saying, “Semaglutide binds to, and activates, the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor to increase insulin secretion, suppress glucagon secretion, and slow gastric emptying.”
Whilst new to UK high streets, the drug has been popular in Hollywood and the celebrity community for a while.
