The Russian Premier League football club Spartak Moscow is the latest organisation to be caught up in a storm of controversy and racism allegations.
Spartak Moscow are under fire for its racist comments after a video was tweeted today from the club’s official Twitter account of three black players training in the sun with the caption “see how the chocolates melt in the sun”, along with some rather inappropriate chocolate bar emojis.
Racism in football is no novelty, already this year Liverpool have filed an official complaint to UEFA over alleged racist abuse from Spartak players towards Rhian Brewstar during an U19 match in December last year. With just six months to go before Russia hosts the World Cup, many are concerned about Russia’s attitude towards black players in football and the prejudices that continue to thrive towards black people in the country.
The tweet has subsequently been removed from their account, however many Twitter users have condemned the tweet and are urging for FIFA and UEFA to intervene.
