TfL have announced today that they will not be renewing Uber’s license once it expires on 30th September.

They have cited that “Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility” in relation to reporting serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks has lead to their decision.

Additionally, TfL said it was concerned by Uber’s use of of Greyball, software that can be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to its app and undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties,

Sadiq Khan supported the announcement stating all companies should ‘play by the rules’. Uber have 21 days to appeal and have said that they would, also hitting back by accusing London of showing themselves as being “closed to innovative companies” in an official statement.

The decision by TfL will affect 3.5 Million active users of the app, not to mention the drivers, in excess of 40,000 who will be out of work.
