Large groups of demonstrators took to the streets of South London yesterday to commemorate the anniversary of the 1833 Abolition of Slavery Act which abolished slavery across the British Empire.

The event held speeches, floats took to the streets and a three-minute silence was observed.

The police were informed about the event beforehand and cordons, as well as roadblocks, were set up across the area.

The Deputy Assistant Commissioner who was in charge of policing the event said, “The gatherings today have been largely peaceful and we thank our communities for working with us to ensure the voices of the community could be heard safely and done so responsibly to ensure the safety of all.”

The abolition of slavery saw slave owners paid a total of £20 million in compensation. As of today, no slaves have been paid any reparations or compensation for the horrors they endured.
