Congratulations are in order for Somalia after the country secured their first ever World Cup qualifying win.
Somalia won the game against Zimbabwe at a score of 1-0 and the only goal of the game was scored by Anwar Sid Ali Shakunda during the 87th minute of the match.
The Somali football team will play again on Tuesday when they are hosted again by Zimbabwe for the second leg.
Somali are currently the lowest ranked team in Africa and the match could not be held in the country due to “security reasons”.
On the win, the Somali Football Federation said, “Somalia makes history to win its first ever FIFA world Cup qualifier clash. Somalia beat Zimbabwe 1-0 in the first leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifier clash in Djibouti this evening”.
The Somali President Mohamed said in a statement, “Congratulations to our OceanStars. Your victory is remarkable. You have played purposely. We are eager to receive you back home as you prepare for the return leg”.
The 2022 World Cup is set to take place in Qatar between November and December.
The 2022 World Cup will interrupt football season but organisers felt no choice but to host it during the winter months as the summer weather where temperatures reach 40 degrees and above would be unsafe for players.
