WhatsApp and Instagram will look very different for users when the Facebook-owned platforms have their names changed later this year.
The two social media apps will become Instagram from Facebook and WhatsApp from Facebook.
On the name-change, a spokesperson for Facebook said, “We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook”.
The news comes after several new features were announced for Instagram last month.
A new tool is being rolled out which will identify comments which include malicious language or hate-speech. Instagram will then prompt the user to consider their comment before posting.
In a statement, Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram said, “This intervention gives people a chance to reflect and undo their comment and prevents the recipient from receiving the harmful comment notification”. Read more about this here.
Instagram has begun hiding likes on posts for users in several countries including Canada and Ireland. They said on the changes, “We’re currently running a test that hides the total number of likes and hides views for some people in the following countries; Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Japan and New Zealand”.
The platform added: “We want your friends to focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get. You can still see your own likes by tapping on the list of people who’ve liked it, but your friends will not be able to see how many likes your post has received. We’re looking forward to learning more about how this change might benefit everyone’s experience on Instagram.”
