Waitrose has apologised after many suggested their new Easter product was racist.

The supermarket chain was selling a trio of named Easter ducklings. The milk chocolate duckling labelled “Crispy”, the white chocolate “Fluffy” and the dark chocolate “Ugly”.

Waitrose says it didn’t intend to cause offence when choosing to label the dark chocolate duckling “Ugly” and have since removed all three naming labels.

Many criticised the suggestion of racism, with some of the public taking to twitter: “if you want to fight real racism, please start with people, not innocent chocolate ducks”.

It’s said that the inspiration of the duckling’s names came from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” fairytale.
