After temporarily enforcing a temporary ban on parties during the pandemic, Airbnb has now announced it is making the measure permanent.

The company began to crack down on guests throwing events in 2019 following a fatal shooting at a house party in California.

In 2020, they introduced an indefinite ban on parties “in the best interest of public health” to prevent people from hosting private events while bars and clubs were closed due to the pandemic.

In a statement announcing the permanent ban, Air Bnb said the number of complaints about parties dropped by 44% since the measure was first introduced. They also added that 6,600 guests were suspended from using the platform last year for breaking the rules.

“In August 2020 we announced a temporary ban on all parties and events in listings globally — which at the time was in effect ‘until further notice’,” the company said in a statement.

“The temporary ban has proved effective, and today we are officially codifying the ban as our policy.”

Exceptions to the global ban may be made for “specialty and traditional hospitality venues” in the future, they added.
