Amazon has been widely criticised for allowing a third party to sell caps that had ‘Black Lives Don’t Matter’ written on them.
The hats, which have now been taken down from the site, were described as “elegant” and “eye catching” by the seller. They were sold for £12.96 before numerous complaints got the item to be removed.
Alexandra Wilson, a barrister from Essex, tweeted: “This is not okay. @Amazon why is this racist hat being sold on your site? Are there no checks in place? This is honestly embarrassing.”
Many people have expressed their disappointment as to why the hat was allowed on the site in the first place and why it took some time before it was removed.
Releasing a statement, Amazon said: “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The product in question is no longer available.”
Speaking to The Independent, Barrister Alexandra Wilson said, “It’s really disappointing that it took some time to be removed. Multiple people reported it and racist material should be removed immediately. Websites like Amazon need to have better checks in place for both their descriptions and photos because this isn’t the first time something like this has happened.”
The retailer has previously faced scrutiny for allowing a third party to sell shirts that wrote, ‘Let’s Make Down Syndrome Extinct.’ These shirts have since been removed as well.
