Faceapp has gotten itself into hot water once more, this time for the controversial addition of “ethnicity filters”.
Like the name suggests, it changes the user’s facial features to reflect either black asian, caucasian or Indian stereotypical features. Criticism has come in droves claiming that the app “encourages people to black up digitally”.
The CEO of Faceapp responded to the criticisms by saying, “The ethnicity change filters have been designed to be equal in all aspects.
“They don’t have any positive or negative connotations associated with them. They are even represented by the same icon.
“In addition to that, the list of those filters is shuffled for every photo, so each user sees them in a different order.”
Despite these claims however the offensive filters have now been removed from the app.
