According to the French outlet, iPhoneSoft, a document has been released which states that Apple could be switching up the naming scheme of the upcoming iPhones.
If the document is accurate, the successor to the iPhone XR will be known as the “iPhone 11”. With the new version of the iPhone XS being called the “iPhone 11 Pro“, while the iPhone XS Max’s successor will adopt the name of the “iPhone 11 Pro Max”.
The new names do make sense, and could be argued as less confusing for iPhone lovers. However, if true, they would represent a very significant change in how Apple positions the phones in their line-ups.
Right now, the iPhone XS is “the iPhone” as it’s the one that most people will be looking at, while the iPhone XR is seen as a cheaper and more vibrant option. Something that could maybe be refereed to as an “iPhone Lite”.
By calling the iPhone XR’s successor the “iPhone 11”, Apple will be effectively positioning that phone at the centre of its line-up, leaving the “Pro” variants to more demanding customers. The XR’s successor is likely to have an LCD screen with two cameras – as opposed to the other two phones which will have three cameras, along with a more advanced OLED screen. But, it’s a bit un-Apple-like to place this one as the headline of their line-up.
