Apple Music has unveiled a fresh performance concept titled The One, a new series that sees leading global artists revisit and reinterpret a standout track from their own repertoire. Shot at Apple Music Studios in Los Angeles, the series pairs cinematic visuals with intimate live performances.

The inaugural episode launched last week with Goo Goo Dolls delivering a reimagined take on their enduring hit “Iris.” Up next, Estelle steps into the spotlight with a newly recorded live version of her 2008 breakout anthem “American Boy,” offering a refreshed perspective on one of the defining tracks of her career.

Estelle on the making of ‘American Boy’: “‘American Boy’. I wanted it to be one of those records that sits in people’s souls, gives people joy, that makes people feel liked when they hear it. One of my absolute favourite parts is when I say ‘I’m liking this American boy’. I had just moved to the US, and whenever I would get on the phone with my little sister, I would walk her through my day and talk to her and she’d be like, ‘I’m liking, I’m liking.’ And she was like, seven or eight at the time, and it just used to tickle me. I thought it was just so funny. So when I wrote the song, I’m going to put ‘I’m liking’ in there like somehow so she knows. I base my tracks off a bassline because a bass can be a drum, a bass can be just a feeling or a vibe on a record, and you can sing it. The words make sense. The melody makes sense. If it’s a great song then you don’t need too much. You just need a feeling and vibes. And this is what you’re hearing.”

Be sure to catch this performance, and any others over on Apple Music right here.
