Avengers: Endgame has surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar as the highest-grossing film, dethroning the 2009 movie after a decade of dominance. The Marvel film was poised to break the record after becoming the biggest box office opening of all time in April.
Avatar has been unchallenged for a 10-year period, having grossed $2,789.7 (£2,231.22) billion. However, Endgame was sitting just $500,000 (£399,902) behind on Friday 19 July at $2,789.2 (£2,230.82) billion – the record will be broken by the end of the weekend.
In a statement, Alan Horn, Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer, said the record was a testament to the “power of movies”.
The groundbreaking announcement came alongside the reveal of fresh films featuring Blade, Shang-Chi and Thor at Saturday’s Comic-Con.
