With over 600 reported accounts of attacks last year, London has experienced a severe spike in acid offences against people over the last few years.
In a recent investigation on the epidemic, BBC Three analysed 15 years worth of data from London’s Met Police and found some shocking results that completely go against everything the British public thought they knew about acid attacks and challenges the media’s representation of these offences.
Two common misconceptions that were revealed by this enquiry are that victims of acid attacks are usually female and that the perpetrator is usually Asian. In fact, BBC Three found that in about 2/3 cases the victim is male and only 6% of suspects were Asian.
