A prison riot broke out in HMP Bedford yesterday evening, leaving two inmates injured.
The riot, which was was partly captured on mobile phone cameras, involved roughly 230 inmates at the Category B facility. Starting at 5pm yesterday evening, the riot was diffused at around midnight- after riot police were sent into the prison at 9pm.
Three men were subsequently arrested under the Prison Security Act 1992, and over 50 inmates were transferred to other prisons.
A spokesman for the Prison Service said, “Specially trained prison officers and staff from the emergency services have successfully resolved an incident involving a number of prisoners at HMP Bedford.
“An investigation into this incident will take place. We are absolutely clear that prisoners who behave in this way will be punished and could spend significantly longer behind bars.”
