A new documentary, Beyond Brix & Mortar, shines a spotlight on Brixton through the voices of those who shaped its identity, grew up within it, and are now working to preserve it. Rather than observing from the outside, the film is rooted in lived experience, capturing the reality of a community facing rapid and often disorienting change.

Brought to life by an award-winning, multi-ethnic creative team, the project speaks to a wider, familiar narrative—one felt across South London and echoed globally. It explores how redevelopment, rising living costs, and distant decision-making can gradually dismantle the cultural fabric of neighbourhoods, particularly those built by Black and working-class communities.

The film is co-directed by Daniyal Harris-Vajda, a Brixton native, and Charlie Rollins, whose family ties to the area trace back to the Windrush generation. Their personal connections ground the story, while also giving it an international resonance, drawing parallels with cities from London to Lagos, and Paris to Philadelphia.

At its heart, Beyond Brix & Mortar examines what happens when a place so central to a community’s identity begins to shift beyond recognition. It brings together a wide range of contributors—market vendors, independent business owners, musicians, youth workers, activists, and descendants of the Windrush generation—offering a layered, intergenerational portrait of Brixton. The film reflects on its vibrancy and resilience, while confronting the mounting pressures of displacement and cultural loss.

Importantly, the documentary looks beyond surface-level change to unpack the structural forces behind it. From historic policies like Thatcher’s Right to Buy to the ongoing housing crisis, it traces how long-term decisions continue to shape who can afford to remain and who is forced out.

For many, the story will feel uncomfortably close to home—the disappearance of familiar spaces, the steady rise in rent, and the growing sense of disconnection from the places they once belonged to. To complete the project, the team behind Beyond Brix & Mortar have launched a crowdfunding campaign, with a particular focus on securing archival material to fully realise the story they’re telling.
