Prime Minister Boris Johnson had a birthday party during the UK’s first national lockdown, a new report from ITV has claimed.

According to ITV, the Prime Minister’s wife, Carrie Johnson, helped organise a surprise party for her husband on June 19 when social gatherings indoors were forbidden by coronavirus restrictions.

It is said that the party took place in the Cabinet Room at No 10 Downing Street after Johnson had returned from an official visit to a school in Hertfordshire.

Downing St say the prime minister only attended the event for less than 10 minutes.

A week before the alleged party, Boris Johnson addressed the nation where he asked that the country follows the rules to keep safe.

“I urge everyone to continue to show restraint and respect the rules which are designed to keep us all safe. It’s only because of the restraint that everyone, you all have shown so far, that we are able to move gradually out of this lockdown”, he said on 10 June 2020.

He added: “It is emphatically not designed for people who don’t qualify to start meeting inside other people’s homes – that remains against the law.”

The revelation about the birthday party comes as senior civil servant Sue Gray finalises her report into the multiple parties held in Downing Street during the pandemic. The report is expected to be published this week.
