Breakdancing has been announced as the latest addition to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games alongside Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. They will debut at the delayed games in Tokyo next year.
This Monday, the International Olympic Committee has confirmed breakdancing to be added as a sport for the 2024 Olympic Games in an attempt to attract a younger demographic to the iconic event.
The newly found Olympic sport will be referred to as “Breaking” in the Paris competition, with the idea being pushed since trials held two years ago at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, and saw popularity among younger viewers.
The competition is set to take place in a downtown venue in Paris alongside sport climbing and 3v3 basketball, with an estimated amount of one million people taking part in the event according to the 2019 Olympic programme commission report.
Many Dance athletes are thrilled with the chance of their talents being recognised as a sport on the main stage with Logan “Logistx” Edra, a dancer from the USA stating:
“It can resonate with a lot of people because hip-hop culture resonates with a lot of people, hip-hop music resonates with a lot of people.”
Adding : “It being in the Olympics, it makes sense that people would refer to it as (a sport) but I think one thing for the breaking community is we want to make sure that it’s not known as just a sport but an art, a sport, a culture.”
