Whilst the world mourned the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York last week, unfortunately there was still some people filled with hate on the loose.
A British woman was reportedly set on fire before a ceremony in honour of the attacks, and the motive is alleged to be the fact she was wearing a hijab and is a Muslim.
Nemariq Al- Hinai, a nurse from Glasgow, was shopping on Fifth Avenue, when her hijab was torched by a lighter. She frantically had to pat out the flames as they ignited her entire blouse.
Thankfully, her injuries were not too series; Nemariq refused medical treatment on the scene and is reportedly still in the USA.
CCTV footage of her supposed attacker have been released, although as of yet, no arrests have been made in what is more-than-likely a blatant hate crime.
Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said, “I would obviously be concerned because it’s symptomatic of the overall rise in Islamophobic sentiment in our society.”
