There’s no doubt that grime and UK rap is growing.
2016 has seen Drake “sign” to BBK, make a surprise appearance at the Section Boyz headline show in London and have South London rapper Dave jump on “Wanna Know’” and it’s not only Drake that’s showing the mandem love; Canada as a whole is embracing the genre in stride.
Just this year, Stormzy, D Double E and Skepta sold out shows in Toronto, the ever growing music hub of Canada. British Man Dem, a collective of DJ‘s & MC’s all hailing from England now based in Toronto are looking to keep the movement growing.
BMD have been going for a little over 10 years, and commenting on Toronto’s recent surge of popularity, they told Noisey, “In 10 years I’ve never seen this like it is now. Toronto is that new spot in terms of ‘I’ve gotta make a stop in Toronto because of Drake co-signing, Skeppy saying this…it’s wicked for us.”
