Two weeks after the Bundesliga revealed its plans to return soon, the German government has now given the German football league permission to resume.

Football in Germany has been suspended since mid-March due to coronavirus but in a statement today (May 6), the German chancellor – Angela Merkel – has now confirmed football in the country can resume this month, making the Bundesliga the first major league in Europe to return.

As the German government has also banned events with large crowds until October 24th 2020, all games will be played behind closed doors without spectators until then.

The Bundesliga’s General Assembly are set to meet tomorrow (May 7) to discuss protocols to ensure the league can return safely. They are also expected to finalise an official return date for the league in that meeting.
