As football around the world has been put on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bundesliga has announced plans to resume in just a few weeks.
The German Football League – the body responsible for Bundesliga and division 2 operations – has announced it is ready to start again on May 9th.
“If we start on 9 May, we are ready. If it is later, we will be ready again,” said the German Football League’s chief executive Christian Seifert.
“For us, what is decisive is what the politicians will decide. It is not for us to decide when.
“Games without spectators are not what we want – but at the moment the only thing that seems feasible.”
The league is currently waiting for the green light from the German government.
If the Bundesliga is able to start again on May 9th, games will take place behind close doors, players will be tested every week and a maximum of 300 people will be allowed in stadiums on match days.
News of the Bundesliga’s eagerness to resume comes as Germany has led the way in combatting coronavirus with its intense programme of testing resulting in less deaths than other affected countries.
