For those of you die hard football lovers out there, you would’ve been pretty gassed to wake up to the news that you can now buy a football club for 99p. Sadly however, if something sounds too good to be true, it’s probably because it is.
Although Basingstoke Town were listed on Ebay for 99p, the club have today confirmed that the ‘sale’ was in fact a “misguided publicity stunt”.
The Southern League Premier side have since applauded the stunt for drawing attention to their need to revamp the club’s structure, as a result of chairman Rafi Razzak’s plan to step down in May.
Basingstoke, founded in 1896, face an uncertain future at their current Camrose Stadium and have debts equating to £2m. It therefore looks like far more than 99p will be required to push the club forward…
