Marvel Studios have confirmed Chadwick Boseman’s lead character in Black Panther will not be recast in the movie’s sequel.

SpeakingSpeaking at Disney’s Investor Day summit on Thursday, Marvel boss Kevin Feige said Boseman’s performance as King T’Challa was too “iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past”.

“And it’s for that reason that we will not recast the character,” he said.

Prior to his tragic death in August of this year, Boseman led the Black Panther in 2018 film as T’Challa, the king of Wakanda. The film went on to make $1.3 billion at the global box office and was the first superhero movie with a Black lead.

Feige added that in order to honour the legacy of Boseman, Marvel “want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.”

Ryan Coogler, director of the original movie, is said to be “hard at work” on the sequel which is due for release in 2022.
