The UK government have now introduced a new £800 fine for people attending house parties of more than 15 people.

The fine was announced by the Home Secretary Priti Patel at a coronavirus press conference at Downing Street this afternoon (January 21).

Ms Patel said the new fine comes as a “small minority” of people continue to breach lockdown rules by hosting and attending gatherings.

The £800 fine will double for repeat offenders, up to a maximum of £6,400.

During the press conference, Priti Patel was joined by Martin Hewitt – chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council – who described house parties as “dangerous, irresponsible and totally unacceptable”.

He added that the police will not “waste time trying to reason” with people attending parties, saying that they are “putting lives at risk”.
