The War in Ukraine, as most wars do, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of displaced people. In an effort to aid the crisis, the British government set up a number of different schemes that would help the refugees settle on British soil.
The couple in question, had fled the war back in February but due to the fact that the couple both had employment in the UK, they were unable to apply for the Homes For Ukraine Scheme, which meant that they essentially had to sofa surf during the interim. Met with ridiculously high rental costs, even in areas outside the capital, the couple were forced to move back to Ukraine after failing to find anywhere after seven months of searching.
Now living in Western Ukraine, in an area called Uzhhorod, which is relatively safe part of the country, they were able to find rental prices in the region of £500 a month, compared with £1500 back in the UK. The absurdity of this simply proves how bad the housing crisis is at the moment in the UK, something has surely got to give.
