There’s some pretty awful news coming out of South London right now, as it is being reported that a tram has derailed leaving dozens of people injured.

British Transport Police have said there has been “some loss of life”, although it is “too early to confirm numbers.” Despite this, it is anticipated that eight people have died, while over 50 are injured.

The BTP have announced that they have arrested the trams driver, although they would not disclose why. His vehicle currently still lies on its side, derailed at an underpass where the tracks branch out.

Robin Smith, assistant chief constable of BTP, said, “A number of people have been taken to hospital with injuries and sadly it looks as though there has been some loss of life.

“It is too early for us to confirm numbers but we are working hard to assess the ongoing incident and we are continuing to focus on recovery efforts.”

Reasons for the derailment are currently purely speculation, but it is anticipated that the torrential rain in the evening had played a part.
