After years of domination from drill, real rap in the UK truly appears to be back. Titans of the scene such as Potter Payper, Rimzee, Youngs Teflon, and many more have sought to make it undeniable that there is a place for “pure” rap music in the 2023 scene for a while now.
The result is a bubbling micro scene which seems perfectly placed to be the next buzzing sound. With this wave on a precipice, it’s only right that artists like D7 are poised to make their mark this year.
The south London rapper has been intent on demonstrating to the masses his ability as a bar-for-bar rapper for a while now. Emerging onto the scene in 2018 as part of the group MTP, (whose wider collective includes the likes of Big Zuu and AJ Tracey) D7 has worked to formulate his own distinct sound since. “Money & Fame” feels like a standout track so far, pushing even further than the levels he reached on previous bangers like “Paper Chase” featuring Big Zuu.
With braggadocious lyrics revolving around reflection on how far he’s come in both his life and career, “Money & Fame” is a certified anthem for when you’re feeling yourself. Featuring friend and collaborator Juvie, it’s a multi-dimensional track that benefits from multiple voices and styles coming together perfectly to create one cohesive piece of art.
