Dave has been crowned the winner of the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize.
The south London artist was presented with the award tonight (September 19) for his debut album Psychodrama.
During his acceptance speech, Dave brought his mum on stage where he thanked her, his brother and his team for their support and inspiration.
Since being released back in March, Psychodrama has been praised by fans and critics for its honest and introspective nature, earning the title as the “boldest and best British rap album in a generation” by The Guardian.
Dave was presented the award by BBC Radio presenter Annie Mac. In her unveiling of the winner, Mac said: “I’m here to speak on behalf of the judges. What a privilege it is to be in this room. What a list! We have come to a decision though.
“The winning album showed remarkable levels of musicianship, it showed courage, it showed honesty. It’s simply exceptional. The winner of the 2019 Mercury Prize is Dave.”
Also in the running for the award this year were other talented artists including Little Simz, slowthai and Nao. Previous winners of the award include legends such as Skepta and Dizzee Rascal.
Dave’s Mercury Prize win comes after a big year for the rapper, with him not only appearing on the recent soundtrack for Top Boy, but also starring in the latest season of the series in which he has also been commended for his acting skills.
With a Mercury prize under his belt for his first studio album, we can only expect massive things from Dave in the future.
