David Armada has dropped his latest album southerngothic, his first since his 2021 project ANKA.
southerngothic, is a unique entry into the music scene, marked by its genre-blurring approach and raw emotional depth. Hailing from South-East London, David draws heavily on his upbringing in a culturally diverse but challenging environment, using music as a means to process and talk about his experiences.
With a runtime of 23 minutes and a tracklist of nine songs, as well as minimal features, the album is a deeply personal exploration of themes like heartbreak, addiction, trauma, and institutional oppression that allows David to shine. Feux brings us the only feature, on the especially introspective “nasty” with the two complimenting each other well.
The album’s sound is a mix of influences, with David blending the gritty, confident flow of UK rap, with the lyrical and thematic depth of R&B and neo-soul. Vocally, David shows his range, combining soulful introspection with the ethereal melodies baring his soul throughout the project.
