Maradona had recently been treated in hospital following a bleed on his brain and was due to be treated for alcohol dependency.

The former Argentinian forward is regarded as one of the greatest football players in history.

He earned 91 caps and scored 34 goals in his international career and won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986. He was also famous for his ‘Hand of God’ goal against England.

Maradona retired from football on his 37th birthday in 1997.

In a statement on social media, the Argentine Football Association expressed “its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend”, adding: “You will always be in our hearts.”
