The legend DMX has sadly passed away at the age of 50 years old after recently suffering from a heart attack.

The news was confirmed by the rapper’s family in a statement this afternoon (April 9).

The statement reads: “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.

“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time.”

“Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”

DMX – real name Earl Simmons – first made waves in the music world in the late nineties with his huge timeless hits “Get At Me Dog” and “Ruff Ryders Anthem”.

He then went onto become a big name in the film world, starring in films such as Belly, Never Die Alone, Cradle 2 The Grave and more.

The multi-talented star has long battled with drug addiction, however, and in October 2019 he cancelled a series of tour dates to return to a rehabilitation centre.

DMX returned to the stage in 2019 at a show in Las Vegas following the rehab stint and in the summer of last year, we saw the artist go head to head with Snoop Dogg in a Verzuz battle which gained over 500,000 viewers.

Over the weekend, he was hospitalised in New York after a drug overdose triggered a heart attack.

After being deprived of oxygen for nearly 30 minutes following his overdose, X’s brain function never returned and on Thursday his organs began failing while he remained on life support until his passing today.

DMX’s family have asked for privacy while they grieve and have said information regarding a memorial service will be released soon.

Rest in peace X.
