Players for Ajax and Heracles refused to play for the first minute of their game following racist abuse from fans in a Dutch division-two game.
Ajax and their opponent began their match with one of each player from both sides holding a football, with both teams refusing to move or play for the first 60 seconds. After the first minute, both teams started their game.
The gesture was taken on board by the fans in attendance who applauded the protest. The referees, linesmen and fourth official were also joined by the coaches who met the protest with applause.
The planning of the protest came after Ahmad Mendes, a winger for the second-division team Excelsior, was called a “negro and cotton-picker” by fans supporting Den Bosch on Sunday.
Following the abuse, the winger was reported to have left the field during the game.
Several names from the Dutch first-division took to social media to comment on the racial abuse which was given during the respected game.
Ajax are next on the pitch on Wednesday when they will play Lille in the Champions League, with no other protests being expected to take place.
