Elon Musk has announced that he intends to introduce subscription fees for all Twitter (now know as X) users, in an effort to combat bots and fake accounts that plague the platform.
Currently, the only subscription based service for the platform is for its premium service, which gets you a verification checkmark, as well the ability to see 50% less ads, and a one hour window to edit your posts and have longer character limits. This premium service is currently priced at £11 a month, it remains to be seen what the subscription fee will be for general access to the platform.
Although Musk is touting the move as an effort to combat bots and fake accounts, the advertising revenue has fallen significantly since he took over the platform, so this is more likely to be the reasoning behind putting the platform behind a paywall.
