As an artist, Eminem has had a massive effect on hip-hop culture but now the Detroit rapper’s impact has been acknowledged by the Oxford English Dictionary.
Eminem’s legendary track “Stan”, which was released back in 2000, sees the Detroit rapper tell the fictional story of a very obsessed Eminem fan. As well as making a hit, Eminem created a new definition for the name “Stan” which has been used to refer to obsessed fans ever since.
Seventeen years later, and the OED has decided to add “Stan”, with the definition Eminem created, into their dictionary. The term “stan”, in its noun form, is defined by the OED as being “an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity”.
Now that the word has been added to the official Oxford English Dictionary, we can expect more people to use the Eminem-inspired term.
