Former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osbourne has been named the new Editor of the Evening Standard. It’s being reported that Osbourne will continue to work his other commitments, one of which includes being the MP for Tatton.
The paper’s proprietor Evgeny Lebedev commented, “In George, we have appointed someone of huge political achievement, and economic and cultural authority.”
Mr. Osbourne has said, “I am proud to be a Conservative MP, but as editor and leader of a team of dedicated and independent journalists, our only interest will be to give a voice to all Londoners. We will be fearless as a paper fighting for their interests.”
Only time will tell how appointing a politician into a high role in the press will play out, but the implications are already scaring us…
